LIFE GROUP Discussion Guide

Paul: Courage   Acts 20:22-24  ADBC 5-28/29-17

Note to Leaders: Every small group is different, so we are providing a summary study with additional resources in the Going Deeper section. Please choose the questions that relate best to your particular group.  Also check out resources in Right Now Media under the key word:  Courage.

Starter:  Who is the most courageous person you’ve known?  What made them courageous?

Engage and Connect

  • Read Acts 20:17-38.
  • Imagine being Paul and knowing this would the last time you would the Ephesus leaders face to face.  If you were having your last face to face conversation with someone you mentored, what would you say?
  • Verses 22-23 make it clear that God has told Paul that trouble awaits.  What does this teach you about the character of God?
  • God is the most powerful voice Paul’s soul, so Paul “considers my life worth nothing to me (v. 24).”  Who do you know that has God’s voice as the most powerful in their soul?  How would your life change if you God were the most powerful voice in your soul?
  • Paul speaks about “finishing the race and completing the task the Lord Jesus has given me.”  What one word would describe the race/task Jesus has given you?  Why did you choose that word?
  • In verses 28-31 Paul specifically instructs the leaders how they are to lead.  If you could sit down with Pastor Clay/Jock to deliver a similar message from God to them, how would you express it?
  • In verses 31-25, Paul uses a number of terms that reference financial resources – inheritance, silver, gold, clothing, needs, hard work, and give.  In your opinion, what point is Paul trying to make?
  • What one action do you need to take after studying this passage?

Prayer:  Father, give me courage to engage, to give grace, to build an interior life, and to act on the mission you gave me.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Letter/email for #3:

Dear ___________________,

I believe God wants you to build an interior life.

As I shared in the message I believe the best beginning to building an interior life is to pray this prayer each hour:

Father, I can spend the next hour with you or without you.  I choose to spend it with you. Amen.

What this prayer doesn’t mean:

  • It doesn’t mean you have to stop being a parent, a spouse, a friend, or an employee.
  • It doesn’t mean you have to read the Bible the next hour.
  • It doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself the next hour.

What does it mean?

  • It means you seek to do the next hour of your life with God.
  • It means you as you work, play, interact, drive, talk, or rest, you are seeking to involve God in every moment.  So for example, if you are about to take a nap, ask God to help you rest and then rest in the sure knowledge that he has everything under his control.
  • It means prayer is more of an ongoing conversation with God throughout the day, instead of merely a set time.
  • It means Bible Study is a regular part of each day so you can learn more about who God is and who you are.
  • It means you explore other spiritual disciplines such as fasting, giving, celebration, service, etc. to help  you know the presence of God and understand him.

My challenge to you is to set a reminder each hour to pray, “Father I can do the next hour either with you or without you.  I choose with you.  Amen.

God bless you and let me know how this goes!
